Phantogram

So, I was talking to some of my friends about going to see The Antlers when they make there way to Neumo’s in a few weeks. Hospice was a staple in our 2009, so it took about 2 seconds to decide we were going. But I hate it when you go to see a show and the openers are terrible (Sorry Telepathic Liberation Army, but…  [sigh]). So i checked The Antlers tag-a-long band Phantogram to see what was up, and I am happy to say this is what is up:

When I’m Small” – Phantogram off of Eyelid Movies out now on Barsuk Records

I am not sure If I am supposed groove along with the back-beat or cry. Hopelessness, loss, and oppression plague the lyrics, but just as the songs heart gives out from grief halfway through its revived against its own will. The chorus of “ooh’s” is some kind of sweet, sung mental anguish; being both catchy and eerie. Before it collapses abruptly to the floor, this track  shrills painfully and noisily, plodding on calmly as ever, pleading for death.

If you’re looking for something disgustingly depressing to fill the void of Hospice, though, this isn’t going to be it, but oh well.

NW fans can catch The Antlers with Phantogram @:

5/4 Vancouver, British Columbia – The Biltmore Cabaret
5/5 Seattle, WA – Neumo‘s
