First of all, I can’t think of many names worse than Diddy Dirty Money. Maybe Staind, or Airborne Toxic Event…anyways, lately I’ve been noticing songs that sound like Coming Home:

The Black Eyed Peas have a song that sounds like it. They have a song that sounds like everyone, but still. The songs came out right about the same time, so it can’t be added to the list of the BEP’s many plagiarism suits.

Now I’m watching a mediocre Brosnan Bond movie, and the beginning of the Madonna theme song sounds like it too.

That’s all I can think of, so its really not that many. I just heard all of them today, so I guess it was on my mind.

I didn’t love Burst Apart at first. I gave it a mediocre review over at No Ripcord (http://www.noripcord.com/reviews/music/antlers/burst-apart). Its something I definitely underrated. I still don’t find it as powerful as Hospice, but its a less emotionally draining listen. Its easier to get through and, while certainly not a happy album, doesn’t leave me depressed for a few hours afterwards. This post was really just meant to about their solid cover of the XX’s VCR. So here’s that.

I’d also like to mention that the new Atlas Sound record is wonderful (http://www.noripcord.com/reviews/music/atlas-sound/parallax) . Somebody already disagrees with me, but that’s okay. At least he’s not calling me a piece of shit for disagreeing with him.

Kettering- The Antlers
As long as the live show is less depressing than the album.

Ten Mile Stereo- Beach House

The Hair Song- Black Mountain

ATX- Alberta Cross

Going Steady- Death From Above 1979
Their first reunion show at SXSW turned into an actual riot. This years reunited band (like Pavement last year) is really the only draw on Friday for me.

Twilight At Carbon Lake- Deerhunter
Of the three times I’ve seen them, this has only been played once. I’d love to see it again. Their live show is never the same twice, and thus far they’ve been great 2/3 times and absolutely incredible once. Here’s hoping that first time gets repeated. Either way, its a band I love.

Watching The Planets- The Flaming Lips
Legendary, theatrical live show. Sure to be a highlight of the weekend.

More or less the product of reviewing music I felt I had overlooked.

Bibio – Mind Bokeh [Mind Bokeh is a disappointing release after Ambivalence Avenue. Bibio just tried to push his music in too many different directions in one album. That said, there is a handful of very good songs that are worth listening to if you are willing to dig a bit]

Sic Alps – Do You Want To Give $$? [I kind of glossed over Sic Alps earlier this year, but Napa Asylum is full of solid tracks that certainly showcase their Bay Area garage style.]

Crystal Stilts – Departure [Joy Division. Not even Joy Division-esque. Just Joy Division.]

Harlem – Cloud Pleaser [One of a dozen songs off of Hippies that I have intermittently chosen as my favorite. A fun, jangly song about being cheated on.]

Dan Auerbach – Whispered Words (Pretty Lies) [Auerbach's solo album came and went pretty silently in 2009, but, like most of the other songs in this list, it is full of a bunch of gems.]

Foxes in Fiction – 15 Ativan (For Erika) [... Atlas Sound...? No? ... huh]

Solar Bears – She Was Coloured In [Slow, wonky, electro-infused psychedelia]

Neon Canyon – Libra [Smartly constructed dream pop]

Supersilent – 10.8 [I like Supersilent just about as much as anyone can like experimental jazz with an ambient leaning. 10.8 marks the high point on 10, a standout track amongst the otherwise effortless fluidity of the album.]
